Mission
CCPHR aims to promote and protect the rights of both child offenders involved with juvenile justice and child victims of criminal offenses. CCPHR achieves its objectives through developing research-based policy, conducting legislative advocacy, partnering with child-focused legal representation institutions, cooperating with juvenile courts, and collaborating with the local community.
Work
To accomplish its goals:
- Develop research projects
- CCPHR will develop a research program to better understand the causes of child delinquency and to assess the ideal solution to eradicate this scourge in the Southwest Georgia by emphasizing on parental engagement in fighting child delinquency.
- CCPHR will equally design a research program on child sex trafficking in the State of Georgia, focusing specifically on the Southwest region.
- CCPHR will also analyze the research data and publish reports for policy-makers, decision-takers, and law enforcement.
- Conduct legislative advocacy
- CCPHR (faculty and students) will participate in the legislative process on children’s issues and promote state and national laws enhancing children’s rights.
- Partner with child-focused legal representation institutions
- CCPHR will collaborate with law firms and other legal organizations to provide free legal representation to children involved in juvenile court proceedings and related administrative proceedings.
- CCPHR will also liaise with the public prosecutor offices and other law enforcement offices in investigating and prosecuting cases of child sex trafficking.
- Teach and train graduate students
- CCPHR faculty will teach courses on juvenile delinquency, criminal justice and human trafficking for undergraduate and graduate students at Albany State University, where students’ skills in conducting research and writing academic articles and policy papers on child rights’ issues will be reinforced.
- Cooperate with juvenile courts
- CCPHR will cooperate with the Dougherty County Juvenile Court on programs to eradicate child delinquency in the Southwest Georgia region (including, parental engagement in fighting youth criminality).
- Collaborate with the local community
- CCPHR (faculty and students) will: monitor press coverage on minority child delinquency and child exploitation; volunteer at local child protection organizations; and participate in the legislative process on children’s issues.
Law and Society Lecture Series is an interdisciplinary seminar developed at The Center for Child Protection and Human Rights (CCPHR) at the Albany State University’s Department of Criminal Justice. It will include presentations by established and incipient scholars in disciplines related to law, criminal justice, sociology, social work, political science, and international relations.
The Law and Society Lecture Series will be a monthly brown bag session of The Center for Child Protection and Human Rights, where the faculty, students, and community members will be gathering during the academic calendar. The seminars are scheduled to start in Fall 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the lecturers will be hosted on Zoom.
Presenters will also have to possibility of submitting their papers for publication at the Albany State University Criminal Justice Journal.
